Let’s take a closer look at the typical steps involved in an EMDR therapy session:

Client History and Assessment: The EMDR specialist gathers information about the client’s traumatic experiences, symptoms, and goals for therapy.
Preparation:
The therapist explains the process and teaches relaxation techniques to help manage anxiety and emotional distress during the therapy.

Assessment:

Desensitization:The therapist guides the client through a series of eye movements. The client focuses on the target memory and associated negative beliefs, emotions, and sensations.
Installation: The therapist helps the client replace negative beliefs with positive ones while continuing the eye movements.
Body Scan:
The client scans their body for residual negative sensations, which are then addressed using EMDR techniques.
Closure:The session ends with a debriefing and a discussion of self-care strategies to implement between sessions.
Reevaluation:
The therapist and client evaluate progress during subsequent EMDR sessions. The specialist adjusts the treatment plan as needed.
